New Hens on the Block

One thing that Mr Shoes & I enjoy is a road trip. Especially this time of year, when Spring is just making an entrance into our part of the world, my feet get itchy to GO SOMEWHERE!
So yesterday we drove out & picked up the new hens on the block; new hens, same names. One gal hardly made it into the nesting box before dropping an egg; maybe she was holding it in the whole drive?!
One of my projects this year is to spruce up the chicken yard by cladding the outside of the pallets in simple 1x6 fence boards. Once the pen is more (bunny) escape proof I can let Floki chase chickens around for his amusement.
I'm just kidding. I don't really think our rabbit is a chicken bully, but if I can make the chicken pen less... I guess the appropriate word is 'ugly', then Mr Shoes has agreed that he might be convinced to build a bunny playpen behind the old house.
All the bunnies would like that!

  1. Id like a pet bunny again. Had one as a child and he was the best, we went on walks and had races and everything. Now we just have our yard bush bunnies and jack rabbits around...maybe I should get another, I see them all the time specially after Easter when people got them for kids and wasn't what they wanted, sigh

    1. That drives me crazy (people who get pets for their kids & then don't want them or, worse yet, dump them outside). Nuzzling Muzzles has a pet wild rabbit named Charity!

    1. One lesson we learned about picking up chickens is, take the truck.
You only have to ride in your fancy German car with a kennel full of chicken just the ONE time for that lesson to stick. Trust me.

  4. I think your new chicken pen will look good. Bunnies are so cute and yes it makes me crazy too when parents by baby chicks and bunnies for Easter pets and then don't want them after.

    1. I think if I sold rabbits at Easter (which I don't), I'd let the parents return them when the kids got bored - more like rentals.

  5. Well, your chickens have a cute house there. It doesn't seem that "ugly". Lol. But I have a feeling your hubby will do whatever it takes to fix it up. :) Congrats on acquiring such a good layer!

  6. Good Evening Mrs Shoes, Thank you so much for visiting Ivy Phyllis and Me! it was lovely to see your comment. So I thought I would pop over and say hello.... and I'm so glad I did.
I have never owned chickens, but one of my friends kept chickens in her garden. She didn't have a bunny to contend with (smile) she had foxes who would try and get into her chicken coop. Luckily they were unsuccessful, but that didn't mean they didn't keep trying. So she was constantly on her guard checking that the coop was secure.
.... and the gift of fresh eggs is a wonderful thing. How lovely that one of your chickens waited until she arrived home, before laying her egg. She was obviously happy to arrive in her new home.
    Best Wishes

  7. Hi Daphne, glad yo made it over to visit!
You know, we are SO lucky, because we have all manner of predator in all around us (from skunk to fox to coyotes to timberwolves & black bears, not too mention owls, hawks, eagles, & the list goes on), but because Saint the Good Shepherd works overtime we haven't had anything go after any of our animals. She is so funny - she goes here & lets out a big howl & then over there, then over there farther & around again - sometimes we mute the tv in the evening to listen to her!

  8. Congratulations on your new chickens! Nice to get an egg that soon. :) I used to have house rabbits and really enjoyed them. No bunnies here though.

    1. My mom had kept one bunny in the house as a pet. She insisted on leaving it loose, so the bugger chewed a lot of electric cords; I could never understand how he didn't electrocute himself.
