Creature Comforts

I often enjoy watching the activity around my various bird feeders; I find it very soothing to watch the littlest of God's creatures go on about their daily business, come what may.
Saint & Manic also keep a close eye, though it's clearly not so much enjoyment as it is  outright reconnaissance...
But I've been distracted lately; my family will be lucky to get any kind of gifts for Christmas kind of distracted.
Yet, amidst all the current emotional turmoil & sad  neglect of my regular tasks, it took a little squirrel this morning to remind me that I cannot just let everything go to hell in a hand basket.

    1. Yes, keep putting one foot in front of the other.
      & fill the darn birdfeeder!

  2. Love it! I'm afraid we had to take our birdfeeder down because of this guy's cousin. If he didn't empty the birdfeeder in one sitting, then a big bully of a bluejay did so. It had to go!

    1. Saint has thinned out the red squirrel population here. Decimated, almost. I have actually been glad this year to see one wicked fast squirrel driving Saint & Manic both half crazy. Some years the Jays take right over, total thugs, they are; but this year only one lonely BlueJay. He's so beautiful, I don't mind feeding him. I almost wish he'd find a mate, but it seems late in the year for that.

  3. What a beautiful feeder! Looks like it holds a lot of seed too, bonus! I love most birds, squirrels not so much. I know they have to eat too, but...

It's okay not to do Christmas the same as others years. Some years there are things much more important then presents & hoopla. I hope you'll take the time your mind & heart are asking for.

    1. A decade ago, the 4Shoes was crawling with squirrels, ermine, mink, skunks, & raccoons. Saint has mostly rectified all those nuisances, to the point that I have been happy to see one red squirrel clinging to the side of my house one his way back & forth to the birdseed.
We are gathering together with Sandal's family this year for Christmas Eve. There will of course be the obligatory hospital visit, but we also plan to play some games & have a Give a Gift, Take a Gift exchange too. Despite our cares, we will do our very best to also have some laughs, because laughter helps us remember our humanity & soothes our souls.
Sandals would not want us to always cry - he would want us to love & laugh; I keep having the strongest feeling that unity should be his legacy, & I'm going to do everything in my power to make it so.

  4. Got the same problem here with a certain squirrel who shall remain nameless! I was told by someone to get seed without the dried corn in it and they will leave it alone. I will try that one day but he's pretty persistent.

As for Christmas. It just came to fast this year and I'm not ready yet. Just got a few presents for the grandkids and put up a lot less decorations that usual. Sometimes less is more. Hang in there.

    1. Our son was home last weekend & declared that we needed to put up a tree, for all our sakes. Boot & Sandals are not just cousins, but also Best Friends, so if my son wants a houseful of Christmas, that's what he's going to get.
He & his Dad went out & cut down one of our 60,000 evergreens. Then Mr Shoes & Boot hung outside lights (more dark spaces than lights anymore - I have to buy LED strings at the after sales!), & he also happily helped me to decorate the tree. It looks much more merry in here, & our GrandAmy certainly loves it.

It's not the first, nor is it likely to be the last, very good advice from Boot.

    2. Your son sounds like mine, wise beyond their years...

    3. Arliene, squirrels don't care for Safflower seed (it's white) but cardinals etc eat it, or Thistle seed. I stopped buying black oil sunflower seed because the squirrels got more of it then the birds did, and we hardly have any squirrels. They love the mixes, peanuts & suet, darn rascals!!

  5. That squirrel is right. Daily life has a way and demanding your attention. There is comfort in that too.

    1. It's easier to focus on a task than think about sad & hard stuff, yes.

  6. Such a cute hungry squirrel. I forgot for two weeks one time....ok maybe more. Life gets crazy. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas (and that you bought some presents)!

    1. I did do presents - some I bought before Sandals got hurt, and the rest I bought online. I just could not do shopping in the city.
