Clear Signs of Spring

Out riding the south side, I came upon what is, for me, the surest sign of Spring... beautiful pussy willows in bloom.
You can also be certain that Springtime is upon the 4Shoes when we have new layers. Hens = eggs. Marvelous Eggs.
The pussy willow is a genuine country beauty - understated & demure, but undeniably warm, soft, & pretty.
Over the winter, Mr Shoes hauled home a milkcow for friends with 5 sons (& counting, Bless her Heart!). A favour done not for pay or for praise, only out of friendship.
Just as we had our coop ready for fresh occupants, the same folks gifted us with 4 young, fluffy butt brown hens! Compared to the white leghorn hens that we've had the last few years, these brown hens are much prettier to look at, calmer to walk through, & they lay brown eggs. Not that colour matters in relation to taste, but the brown eggs are just more aesthetically pleasing to me somehow.
I couldn't resist sharing this lovely shot by Michael Quinton of a wild hare enjoying his pussy willow treats. I can attest that all the occupants of the Bunny House are quite happy to scarf down as many fresh, young willow branches as I can cut.
S
pring has definitely arrived at the 4Shoes.
Now, if Mother Nature would only oblige with a couple of days of warm, slow, & gentle rains to soak the Earth & show us some
GREEN!

  1. I didn’t realize you were so far behind us. Once you see those first buds, it seems like the rest happens pretty fast. Beautiful pictures!

    1. They are slinging around the word 'drought'... it was dry last year but that was good for us. Situated between one of the Great Lakes (Lake Winnipeg) & another large lake, Lake Manitoba, the Interlake region is not short of underground water, but last year dried up a lot of surface water and now our forestlands (the 4Shoes is surrounded by forestlands, except for croplands carved out of the bush) are tinder dry. Without a couple of days of steady rain, we could be in trouble. Yesterday a neighbour called to warn me that 5 fire depts were out working grassfires that had leapt into the trees not 15 miles from the 4Shoes. Scary. Come on, RAIN!

    2. That’s very scary. I’m sick of fires!! We get them around here every summer and it’s now just a way of life.

  2. Love the bunny and willow picture. I didn’t realize they ate them. Pussy willows are a favorite of mine. Hoping you have lots of blooming plants and green grass soon! We’re getting grass now and some buds on trees.

    1. I noticed that the oak trees are budding out. My apple trees haven't even started, despite the fact that I have been hauling water to them!

  3. Hope your spring comes in easier and nicer than ours did!

    1. It's been quiet so far, but windy, which is scary with fires nearby. Hopefully, we get some rain soon.

  4. Beautiful pussy willow photos. I didn't know bunnies ate them either. Wishing you a consistent soaking gentle rain, the kind where you can see the green come out - right before your eyes.

    1. THAT is just exactly what I've been hoping & praying for... none in the forecast so far though.

  5. I love pussy willows! But I haven't seen a plant since I was a kid. We must be too far south for them. All your photos are lovely, and I have to agree that brown eggs are so much more appealing than white ones. Maybe because white eggs used to be all we could buy in the grocery store.

    1. Besides cutting them for the bunnies, I cannot resist brushing my own face across the pussy willow buds. I think I am done with white leghorns for good - I like coloured eggs, & I personally found the leghorn temperaments to be a little nasty (like my archived piece on the 'The BORG Chicken Collective').
      Just to clarify:
The photos that I take myself are all marked with my copyright; photos with artist credits are also marked; the pussy willow pics this time were pulled from google & had no credits attached.
